Uncle Odumegwu Ojukwu Imotalised.

The Anambra State University has been renamed after the late Biafra warlord, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
NAN reports that the state House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill during the plenary of the legislature in Awka, changing the name of the university situated at Uli to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.
The decision was reached after the house adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, chaired by Mrs Rita Maduagwu, a member representing Nnewi South 2, under APGA, recommended the change of name.
Maduagwu explained that the bill was read the second time on the floor of the house on December 17, 2013, after the committee discovered that the university’s name was changed before from Anambra State University of Science and Technology. She said there were a number of provisions in the extant law that required review.
“After due consideration of facts and information, the committee recommends that the law establishing the university be repealed while a new law aimed at amending the principal law be passed” she said.
Speaking also, Valentine Ayika, a PDP member representing Njikoka 1, remarked that the bill was due for passage since it has been read second time in December 2013. Similarly, Tony Muonagor, APC, representing Idemili North, revealed that the gesture was to immortalise the late Ojukwu, and further encourage hard work among the people of the state and other Nigerians.Continue reading
Ebele Obi, APC Idemili South, stated that the passage was a welcome development, while Obinna Emenakaya, APGA Anambra East, in his reaction noted that the application for the change of name was even long over-due as it was meant to immortalise the man who fought and lived for the Igbo people.
Mrs Chinwe Nwaebili, the speaker of the house hinted that the university would be a multi-campus institution situated in Awka, Igbariam and Uli.
Ojukwu, who passed away on November 26, 2011, was a Nigerian military officer and politician. He served as the military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1966. He was the leader of the breakaway Republic of Biafra from 1967 to 1970, before becoming a politician from 1983 to 2011. He died at the age of 78.
It would be recalled that Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, recently threatened delegates at the ongoing National Conference
